Let’s Try Again…

In January 2014 I left hospital promising myself that by July the same year I would have pushed my boundaries, tried hard every day and made great memories. This became my #TryBeforeJuly (TB4J) challenge and it was the best thing I’ve ever done.

I discovered new and exciting sports; I pushed my abilities when it came to life in a wheelchair – things like taking a train journey or using an escalator. I even achieved my TB4J ‘season finale’ of riding a motorcycle again – which ruled!

Quite simply, in a few short months I achieved things I could have very easily put off for the rest of my life. However that July deadline was like a shot of energy: I had fun, I discovered new things, I learnt new skills… and I made memories.

I realised new sports would help me keep in shape, and I realised too that new wheelchair skills would be beneficial. And yep, I took for granted that riding a motorcycle would rule. But what I hadn’t expected was how much I would treasure those memories. The silly unexpected moments, the laughter, the tears, the stories.

Now the clock is ticking again.

“That July deadline was like a shot of energy: I had fun, I discovered new things, I learnt new skills… and I made memories”

I’m making a list of new things to do. I’ve already decided to try water skiing and archery; I’m also looking into English Literature evening classes and maybe a trip to Paris, too. I’ve even got an exciting ‘season finale’ planned which I cannot wait to show you.

The big question I want to ask now is… what will you try?

Don’t sit on dreams of marathons you might run or snowboards you might learn to ride. Block your ears to those excuses about joining that gym or trying a Zumba class. Don’t let work stand in the way of that city break. Book those tickets, visit that festival, buy that car – just, well, do it!

But don’t think of it as a bucket list. Instead, get on with your dreams now: start making plans and you will start making memories – and they can all be yours by this July.
